Unfortunately, treatment of older adults has been characterized by narrowly assuming older adults’ needs to be physical…The wellness paradigm to health care integrates numerous domains of personhood, promotes health and prevention, and incorporates a client’s strengths into treatment…Selective optimization with compensation is a gerontological theory which describes strategies for successful aging. The theory consists of three processes which can be incorporated into counseling. Discussion of how to synthesize the wellness paradigm and selective optimization with compensation are discussed and a case study is provided.
